Currently my body of work has centered around the deterioration of man-made objects and the city of Indianapolis. The word “deteriorate” seems to have a negative connotation to it. But my art does not represent how Indianapolis is falling apart. I am more interested in the middle ground between a wall painted with bright vibrant colors some twenty or forty years ago and how time, nature, other people, ect. has effected it up to now. For me these paintings are a record of time. I use the relationship of thick and thin paint along with color field transitions to explore the beauty of the city in the act of aging. I find the process of the city aging aesthetically appealing rather than a finished immaculate building or a pile of rubble.
Two artists I find inspiration from are Cy Twombly and Richard Diebenkorn. Diebenkorn uses such a complex yet simple approach to using color fields. I find his color fields though consistent throughout also show an idea of process. I see Twomply’s use of graffiti relate to deterioration on clean neutral colors. Geographic location has a strong tie to both of their works, as well as mine.
Going forward I would like to explore other urban settings and continue this body of work. After achieving my BFA in Painting I would like to eventually pursue an MFA in the subject but not after exploring the states and eventually Europe with my paintings.
